If you’re looking to buy a new home in Arizona, you may have heard that local community members believe developers have difficulties supplying water to their developments. State law requires all developers in many parts of Arizona to prove that their homes will have a water supply for 100 years. In some cases, this law means that proposed communities may not have enough groundwater, and will have to seek other sources.
Arizona is in desperate need of new homes – it’s one of the fastest-growing states in the country, and a recent state Department of Housing report found that the state is short 100,000 homes. Read on to find out how this new law affects new home buyers and how we’re developing homes that are focused on a sustainable future.
The Law is Good for Residents
While those seeking a new home in areas affected by this law (such as Prescott) may initially panic about the potential for developments to slow, you should know that it is good for residents. It means that you can rest assured that your home will have a good water supply for the duration of your lifetime.
Mandalay Homes and Water Conservation
Sustainability is at the forefront of what we do here at Mandalay Homes, so finding water sources and reducing water consumption has always been an important topic to us and something we’ve taken seriously. We don’t just look at water consumption through the lens of what happens when you turn on a tap or step into the shower; we also think about it in terms of power.
You may be surprised to learn that when the energy company creates just 1 kWh of electricity in Prescott Valley three-quarters of a gallon of water in consumed in the process. Since the average home in Prescott Valley uses over 12,500 kWh of electricity annually, each home is responsible for 9,500 gallons of water consumed through electricity usage alone.
We know that when we reduce energy demand through our energy-smart homes, we reduce water consumption. Our iON Series homes with solar reduce energy demands by 75%, which means that’s conservation of around 7,000 gallons of water during the production of power for the area.
Our iON Zero homes reduce water consumption through electricity production further, to potentially less than 1,000 gallons a year, and an iON series home with storage could potentially reduce that down to near zero.
